In late 2007, Bus Éireann, the Irish national bus company purchased 32 vehicles of the type Axial 100 (ADD 130). The double deck coaches will be used for public transport and will be allocated to commuter routes in Ireland. These double deck coaches are the first of their kind to operate in Ireland on scheduled services. The first vehicles will be delivered in spring 2008.

Axial 100 (ADD 130)

The Axial 100 (ADD 130) is a luxury double deck coach which can be supplied in various lengths and on various different chassis. Bus Éireann chose the 13 metre version built on the VDL Bus International SBR 4000+ MX chassis. The vehicles are equipped with a DAF MX 340 S engine and an AS Tronic automatic gearbox. The vehicles have good wheelchair access through the front door by means of a standard ramp. They are also equipped with destination equipment, a payment table, a ticket machine, a full CCTV system and 78 luxury leather seats.
Bus Éireann is national bus company, serving an annual 50 million customers across Ireland, except Dublin (which is served by sister company Dublin Bus). Bus Éireann operates city bus services in the four main regional cities, Cork, Waterford, Limerick and Galway, as well as Commuter, Town and Rural services. It also manages and operates the national School Transport Scheme on behalf of the Irish government. The company also provides tours and airport services into Dublin, Cork, Shannon, Knock and Kerry Airports.
Bus Éireann is a significant contributor to the Irish economy, employing 2860 people around Ireland, including 1778 professional bus drivers. It operates a fleet of 1300 vehicles. It is envisaged that the majority of the new double deck coaches will be allocated to the eastern region and will operate on the Navan-Dublin commuter route. The introduction of the Axial double deck coaches will coincide with a new high frequency ‘city style service’ on the route – a 15 minute all day frequency from 05.20 until 23.00. At the same time upgraded customer facilities such as enhanced bus stops and shelters will be introduced.
